Skylar Sieben is entering her second year on the Canadian National Bobsleigh Team, quickly establishing herself as one of the country’s most promising brakemen. After transitioning to bobsleigh from track and field, Skylar has brought exceptional speed, power, and competitiveness to the ice.

Skylar spent five years as a Division I athlete at the University of Arizona, where she competed in the heptathlon, before transitioning into the sport of bobsleigh. Her background in multi-event sport laid the foundation for her rapid rise within Canadian bobsleigh.

Her rookie year was highlighted by a bronze-medal triumph at the World Cup in XX with Melissa Lotholz, and competing in her first World Championships in Lake Placid where a her family was able to come out and support her.

Skylar holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Her graduate research focused on Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the small intestine, work she completed in a gastroenterology lab over two years. She had the opportunity to present her research at a conference in Colorado – an experience she considers a highlight of her academic journey.

Outside of sport, Skylar loves travelling, playing pickleball, tennis, or beach volleyball with friends, and heading out on camping or backpacking trips. She’s an avid reader of Nicholas Sparks novels, a devoted Taylor Swift listener, and a huge fan of rom-coms—especially Hallmark Christmas movies.

Looking ahead, Skylar hopes to combine her passion for science with her love of working with youth by becoming a high school biology teacher. She is also drawn to the field of embryology and dreams of working in an IVF clinic one day. And if she had another lifetime to explore, she’d happily spend it as a zookeeper.

Did You Know … Like most bobsleigh athletes, Skylar’s favourite place to compete is in St. Moritz, Switzerland… She has a pet tortoise, Ashoka…She has a chocolate touch, and particularly loves Reese’s peanut butter cups along with red velvet cupcakes from Crave.
